Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Karolinska Institutet conducts internationally leading research and education in physiology, pharmacology, anesthesiology, intensive care medicine, and related disciplines. The department offers a highly competitive experimental and translational research environment supported by advanced scientific infrastructure.

This position provides an outstanding opportunity to work within an internationally recognized academic and clinical environment where research, education, and patient-centered care are closely integrated, contributing to the development of evidence-based pediatric intensive care, innovation, and the education of future specialists.

Description of the subject area

The subject area encompasses highly specialized perioperative medicine and intensive care of infants, children, and adolescents, including the application of advanced life-support technologies such as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and extracorporeal life support (ECLS).

Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital provide a strong research and educational environment in anesthesiology and pediatric intensive care, characterized by close clinical integration and interdisciplinary collaborations, including established partnerships with the KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

Research within this field includes pharmacology, advanced monitoring of ventilation and circulation, regional anesthesia, postoperative pain management, capnodynamics, as well as mechanical ventilation, dialysis, nutrition, and intensive care transport within pediatric critical care.

Karolinska University Hospital serves as Sweden’s national highly specialized referral center for several pediatric disciplines, with clinical operations located in both Solna and Huddinge.

Your mission

You are expected to contribute to the advancement of evidence-based care and innovation in pediatric perioperative medicine, anesthesiology, and intensive care medicine, in close integration with the education and training of future specialists. The overall goal is to improve clinical outcomes and quality of life for critically ill infants, children, and adolescents.

The position includes initiating and conducting research of high international quality within pediatric anesthesiology, pediatric intensive care, and/or ECMO/ECLS, while actively contributing to the continued development of the clinical research environment.

You will also be expected to participate in teaching at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels, and to supervise students, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers. In addition, the role includes active participation in and further development of clinical activities within pediatric anesthesiology, pediatric intensive care, and ECMO/ECLS.

The position further requires active engagement in leadership and strategic development of the field, with a focus on strengthening research, education, and clinical excellence. Successful development within this area requires a strong foundation of national and international collaborations combined with demonstrated experience in research closely linked to clinically relevant and patient-oriented questions.

This is a combined appointment, with 50 per cent of the position based at Karolinska Institutet and 50 per cent at Karolinska University Hospital.
