- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The department of clinical science and education, Södersjukhuset (KI SÖS) conducts internationally recognized research focusing on common diseases and medical conditions, as well as education from undergraduate to doctoral level. The overall aim of all activities is to improve human health. The professorship is based at Södersjukhuset and represents a strategically important link between Karolinska Institutet and clinical practice, providing strong opportunities for clinically relevant research and research-based education in close collaboration with healthcare services. Stroke research at KI SÖS focuses on acute care as well as the relationship between stroke and metabolic diseases such as diabetes, and encompasses epidemiological, clinical, and experimental studies.

Description of the subject area

Globally, stroke is the third leading cause of death and disability. Each year, an estimated 12 million new cases occur, and nearly 7 million people die as a result. At the same time, the prevalence of diabetes is increasing rapidly and now affects more than 500 million adults worldwide, leading to a growing burden of serious long-term complications. Stroke is one of the most important of these; diabetes more than doubles the risk of ischemic stroke, worsens neurological outcomes, and increases mortality. Research at the interface between diabetes and stroke addresses a critical knowledge gap between neurological and metabolic diseases—two areas that often develop in parallel and where a multidisciplinary perspective is essential. The large number of patients seeking both acute and planned care for diabetes and neurological complications provides a solid foundation for advanced preclinical and clinical research, as well as teaching at both undergraduate and advanced levels.

Your mission

You are expected to lead a research group working on experimental research in stroke and diabetes. The role also involves integrating experimental studies with clinical and epidemiological research. Part of the assignment is to conduct mechanistic research on novel pharmacological treatments for diabetes and obesity, for example GLP-1 receptor agonists, with a focus on neurological complications.

Furthermore, you are expected to actively contribute to and support the development of a cohesive educational environment by participating in teaching at KI at both undergraduate and advanced levels. As a professor, you are also expected to contribute to the strategic development of research and education within the department, Campus South, and Karolinska Institutet as a whole.
