The Faculty of Science, Department of Geography and Geology, at the University of Turku invites applications for contract-based, fixed term postdoctoral researcher positions for 3 years. Employment starts on as agreed during year 2024.

Job description

The selected candidates will:

• Conducts scientific research and collaborate within research group and acquire domestic and international research funding.

• Provides research-based teaching:

• Supervise or co-supervise theses at in MSc levels.

• Keeps abreast of scientific developments.

• Engages in societal interaction and international cooperation in their field.

The positions encompass hydroinformatics, fluvial geomorphology, big data analyses and statistics in hydrology, with a primary focus on new digital measurement methods and their application in digital twin of river basin. The selected candidates will undertake their own postdoctoral research, co-supervise PhD researchers, supervise MSc students and provide teaching (5% of their working time), particularly in the flagship doctoral pilot (comprising 60 doctoral researchers in the consortium, with 16 doctoral researchers at the University of Turku) and engage in international cutting-edge research as part of the Digital Waters research community.


Who we are looking for

Requirements 

We are seeking a highly motivated person with:

  • PhD in geography, geology, water engineering, forestry or a relevant subject.
  • proficiency in fluvial geomorphology, biogeography, geoinformatics, big data analyses, statistics or remote sensing
  • learning programming languages such as Python or R (merit).
  • fieldwork and field measuring skills are a valuable asset but not mandatory.

Additionally, the selected candidates are expected to be proficient in fluvial geomorphology, biogeography, geoinformatics, big data analyses, statistics or remote sensing as part of hydrological research and societal applications. Research achievements, especially in these areas, demonstrated through publications, are highly valued.

The applicants are expected to have good writing and communication skills in English. Finnish language skills are an advantage.

Salary and trial period

The salary is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. The job requirement level of the position is 5 – 6 (3213,55-3747,44€).  In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance is paid. Salary, based on previous experience and skills, is approximately 3600 - 4100 euros/month at the beginning of the assignment.

The position has a trial period of six months.
