About the FSTM

The Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) at the University of Luxembourg contributes multidisciplinary expertise in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science, Life Sciences and Medicine.
Through its dual mission of teaching and research, the FSTM seeks to generate and disseminate knowledge and train new generations of responsible citizens in order to better understand, explain and advance society and the environment we live in.
Within the FSTM, the Department of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (DHML) coordinates all teaching programmes in life sciences, medicine, nursing, radiology and midwifery. The department's research combines basic and translational, molecular and computational approaches, with a particular focus on cancer biology, while also encompassing clinical research in human health and disease.
The DHML cooperates with the national health care centers and leading international biomedical research institutions. As medicine and health are strategic priorities for the University of Luxembourg, the department is actively expanding its education and research activities in these fields, providing exceptional opportunities for medical and biomedical initiatives.
Your role
The position focuses on innovative, interdisciplinary teaching in clinical microbiology at the bachelor's level and within medical specialization programmes. The recruited professor will play a central role in establishing teaching and research expertise in areas such as infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and diagnostic microbiology.
The successful candidate will lead the development and coordination of clinical microbiology teaching activities across the University's programmes in medicine and health-related sciences. The role includes the implementation of a state-of-the-art clinical microbiology curriculum, incorporating advanced educational tools such as digital microbiology platforms, virtual labs, simulation-based training, and case-based learning. Working closely with faculty members and clinical partners, the successful candidate will ensure an integrated and cohesive learning experience for students.
Research Portfolio
The candidate is expected to have an internationally recognised research profile and to develop ambitious research activities in areas including infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, hygiene, microbiome science, data-driven health sciences, and digital medicine.
Clinical Integration
The ideal candidate will have a medical background with relevant clinical experience in microbiology, and a strong commitment to integrating clinical perspectives into education. This includes fostering strong links between teaching, research and clinical practice, thereby enhancing the practical application of clinical microbiology in medical education. The candidate is encouraged to maintain a clinical affiliation while working at the University ensuring strong ties between academia and clinical practice.

Your profile
- An MD with a specialization in microbiology, e.g.: bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and other infectious diseases, and/or a PhD in microbiology, e.g.: bacteriology, virology, parasitology, and other infectious diseases, or a closely related field. Practical experience in diagnostic microbiology and infectious disease management is considered a strong advantage
- Teaching experience in microbiology and clinical microbiology at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels, ideally within medical or biomedical programs
- Proven commitment to interdisciplinary and innovative teaching, particularly in integrating clinical microbiology with medicine, life sciences, and public health
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement new educational courses, including clinical training module and laboratory-based instruction
- Familiarity with modern teaching methods and tools, such as online learning platforms, simulation-based training, and case-based learning approaches
- Research focus on infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, hygiene, microbiome science, data-driven health sciences, and digital medicine
Language requirements
