About Our Research: Our Theoretical Biophysics Lab studies the physical principles that govern the response of cells to the mechanical properties of their environment. Using elasticity theory and principles of statistical physics and active matter physics, we investigate fundamental biological phenomena such as the establishment of cell morphology and structure, the emergence of elastic interactions between cells, patterning, aggregation and alignment of cells. Using computer simulations, we also investigate the interactions of motor proteins and filaments in the cell cytoskeleton that generate forces and movements in cells, for instance during cell motility and neuron growth and differentiation.

Job Description: There is an opening for master students to engage in the diversity of research topics in our group. Specific projects include:

(i) Development of physics-based models of elastic interactions between cells. The cells in our body are contractile, they use molecular motors to generate forces that, among other things, enable them to sense and respond to the mechanical properties of their environment. Our aim is to obtain fundamental understanding of how cells mechanically communicate with each other and to investigate how complex multicellular organization emerges from simple mechanical interactions.

(ii) Develop computer simulations of neuron growth: Brain function depends on precise yet highly dynamic connectivity between neurons. Mechanical forces and environmental cues are now recognized as key regulators of neuronal growth, guidance, and development. We develop molecular-level computer simulations of motor proteins and other cytoskeletal components to investigate how intracellular force generation and transport drive neuronal growth and development.

Our research is carried out in close collaboration with leading experimental groups throughout the world, providing opportunities to connect theoretical predictions with experimental observations.

Your Profile (To excel in this role, we seek candidates with):

  • You are curious about both biology and physics, and motivated to develop and rigorously explore theoretical models to elucidate fundamental principles that govern biological phenomena.
  • You have a strong background in physics and hold a BSc degree in either Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Bio-engineering, Mechanical-engineering, or any combination of these.
  • Motivated to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and international research environment.
  • Excellent command of English.

About Your Supervisor: Dr. Assaf Zemel is a theoretical biophysicist. He obtained his Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and then shifted to the field of cell mechanics through postdoctoral training at the Weizmann Institute of Science and the University of California at Davis. Since 2008, Dr. Zemel is heading the Theoretical Biophysics Lab at the Institute of Biomedical and Oral Research of the Hebrew University and is a faculty member at the Fritz Haber Research Center for Molecular Dynamics.
