ForestCarboVision is searching for a researcher for drone-based and terrestrial data processing. The data will be used for research articles and project deliverables. Key issues are carbon farming and carbon-based market development in forestry.

Job description

The core responsibility of the position is to transform drone- and LiDAR-based forest datasets into high-quality scientific outputs. This includes:

• processing UAV LiDAR, photogrammetric and orthophoto datasets;

• processing terrestrial scanning LiDAR and photogrammetric datasets;

• developing reproducible data-processing workflows;

• analysing tree-level forest data;

• supporting tree-level forest data analysis and simulations;

• leading and contributing to the preparation of peer-reviewed scientific publications based on project datasets;

• supporting project reporting and deliverables through scientifically validated analyses;

• publishing comparable drone-based datasets online for Finland, Iceland and Ireland;

• integrating drone data and terrestrial scanning data with field plot measurements, forest inventory variables and other ground-truth data;

• contributing to the development of digital forest twin workflows and forest carbon MRV methodologies (Measurement, Reporting and Verification).

A central expectation for this position is active contribution to scientific publishing. The selected candidate is expected to:

• lead or co-author multiple peer-reviewed journal articles based on project datasets;

• contribute to the development of publication-ready datasets and analyses;

• support the preparation of manuscripts in areas such as:

• UAV-based forest monitoring and MRV;

• tree-level biomass and carbon estimation;

• forest management scenarios and digital twin applications;

• multi-sensor data integration and validation;

• collaborate closely with the project leader in structuring and delivering a publication pipeline.

The position is strongly oriented toward producing publishable scientific results rather than only technical or support tasks.

The location is Helsinki or some other Luke location (to be agreed separately).

Our expectations of the applicant

  • Required qualifications
  • Master’s degree in forestry, forest sciences;
  • demonstrated ability to work with scientific data and analytical workflows;
  • demonstrated ability to contribute to scientific writing and preparation of peer-reviewed publications;
  • strong motivation to produce publishable scientific results;

  • experience with UAV/drone data collection and processing;
  • drone operator licence from Finland;
  • driver license;
  • experience with photogrammetry and LiDAR software (e.g., Metashape, Pix4D, DJI Terra, LiDAR360, CloudCompare);
  • experience with Python or other scripting tools;
  • prior involvement in scientific publications (as author or co-author);
  • experience in biomass or carbon estimation;
  • practical knowledge of forestry and forest management.
  • ability to work independently
