Project

Pain is an adaptive sensory experience that prevents tissue injury, but its chronification constitutes a major public health and socioeconomic burden. Osteoarthritis (OA), affecting over 500 million people worldwide, is one of the most prevalent chronic pain conditions, with articular pain as its most disabling symptom, although its mechanisms remain unclear. Since articular pain originates in the joint, peripheral sensory neurons innervating this tissue represent a relevant and accessible target for mechanistic investigation. In this PhD project we propose investigating the molecular determinants of the excitability of joint-innervating neurons, with an emphasis on the roles, regulation and modulation of TRP channels. The project will entail the use of varied techniques, such as, life cell imaging, cellular electrophysiology, induction of OA phenotypes, chemical and genetic neuron labeling, scoring of mouse pain phenotypes, etc.

Profile

  • Must hold a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, Physiotherapy or Neuroscience.
  • A track record of research in sensory/pain neuroscience.
  • Be familiar with intracellular Ca2+ imaging and/or patch-clamp electrophysiology.
  • Experience in animal work (pain behavior, with valid certificate for animal use).
  • Skills on statistical data analysis, data plotting and scientific reporting.
  • A track record of peer-reviewed scientific publications is highly desirable.

Offer

  • A stimulating, internationally renowned research environment in the Laboratory of Ion Channel Research, which is one of the top sensory biology labs worldwide, headed by 5 PIs and 40+ international academic and technical staff.
  • We will provide the opportunity to contribute to advance research in pain and fundamental neuroscience, using multiple experimental approaches and with access to training and expertise.
  • We will stimulate interactions with other local and international laboratories, collaborations with industrial partners and applications for fund raising to enhance career development.
