The section of Statistics and Data Science of the Mathematics department at KU Leuven is active in a variety of research topics. We conduct research on robust statistical methods, anomaly detection, classification and clustering techniques, visualization, and statistical learning.

Project

Depending on your interests and motivation, your work will be on the development of one or several of our current research topics: 
  • robust methods for functional data
  • robust methods for tensor data
  • robust statistical learning
  • methods for anomaly detection 
  • applications of new methods and techniques in the fields of chemometrics, genetics, fraud detection, and others in collaboration with experts from the field

Profile

  • You have a master degree in mathematics, statistics, or engineering with a solid background in statistics, with at least the grade of distinction. You can also apply if you are currently in your last year of study and will obtain your degree in the summer.
  • Good knowledge of R and/or Python is required.
  • You have a good command of English, both spoken and written.
  • You possess good communication skills.
  • You need to include a detailed transcript of your study results when applying.

Offer

  • We offer a position as Ph.D student which is initially for one year, but will be renewed three times after a positive evaluation. This four-year period offers the opportunity to obtain a Ph.D in mathematics.
  • A dynamic international research environment that supports your development of expertise in statistics and data science.
  • The opportunity to build an international network and present ongoing research at international conferences.
  • Preferred starting date is not later than September 1, 2026.
  • During your Ph.D research, you follow the doctoral program of the KU Leuven.
