Functie

Your full- or part-time assignment (minimum of 50%) will consist of research support in an intellectually enriching, open and creative environment. You will support a team of researchers in cleaning and structuring data for an ongoing project related to health events (see details below), plus help in preparing an event targeted to managers.
Project background: people can be confronted by health events in their daily lives like being faced with a disease. For instance, over 68,000 Belgians were newly diagnosed with serious non-communicable diseases like cancer (Healthybelgium, 2023). When consumers experience an individual health event, such as a cancer or diabetes diagnosis, their renewed focus on health may change their grocery shopping preferences. The goals of this research are to investigate (i) whether and how individual health events (e.g., cancer diagnosis) impact grocery shopping behavior, and (ii) how these effects vary depending on the event characteristics.
Task for research support: A first step in this research is to identify when a consumer is facing a health event. Via a collaboration with CBS in the Netherlands (Centraal Bureau voor de Statisitiek), we have access to consumers health data. The task of the research assistant is to dive into this data, with the goal to make an overview of the different health events that occurred, and to classify the events in terms of severity.
Event targeted to managers: The research assistant will also prepare a practitioner-oriented event that will focus on disseminating academic knowledge to retail managers. The tasks of the research assistant are to help in setting up the event, preparing communication and arranging the practical details.
The research assistant will be supervised by Prof. dr. Els Breugelmans and Prof. dr. Lien Lamey.

Profiel

• You have an academic master’s degree in the area of humanities and social sciences or other relevant fields (consumer sciences).
• You can demonstrate knowledge and skills in a statistical software (preferably R) for data cleaning, data structuring and data analysis techniques.
• You have experience with the use of big data sets
• You are able to work both independently and in a team.
• You have a very good command of English and Dutch (oral and written).
• Creativity and enthusiasm are considered important assets.
• You are highly motivated about contributing to cutting-edge research.

Aanbod

We offer a fixed-term employment as a research assistant (100%) for three months, or a lower appointment (minimum 50%) for an equivalence of three full-time months. The starting data is flexible but no later than April 2025. The salary scale linked to this position is salary scale 43.
