Job description

Risk reduction for composite structures in flying vehicles involves using a range of safety factors, one for each risk, resulting in overly conservative design and unnecessarily heavy components. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) enables a weight-optimised platform by reducing overly conservative design solutions, i.e. reducing the safety factors. Instead, real-time monitoring and feedback on structural prognostics ensure the structural certification process. SHM can be a key technology for realising cheaper flying platforms, reducing lifecycle costs, and achieving rapid certification. This is especially true if SHM is used to monitor damage growth.

The project is about evaluating and implementing techniques for structural health monitoring of composite structures, which means placing sensors in or on the surface of a component made from composite materials. In the project, you will work experimentally to develop functional sensor systems, conduct measurements, and create computer systems that collect measurement data and analyse the results. The goal is to detect defects from manufacturing and damage from mechanical impacts.

  • Engaged and ambitious colleagues along with a creative, international and dynamic working environment
