The Department of Clinical Sciences at Danderyd Hospital (KIDS) was established in its current form in 1993. The department brings together education, clinical practice and research in close collaboration. Each year, approximately 900 students complete parts of their undergraduate medical education at KIDS. Each year, approximately 900 students complete parts of their undergraduate medical education at KIDS, across a broad spectrum of clinical activities. KIDS also conducts extensive clinical research, with around 100 doctoral students and approximately 15 doctoral defences per year. The research is of high international standard, with around 300 publications annually, as well as several collaborations with external partners. The department also offers courses within specialist training, continuing professional development and doctoral education. Both research and education are conducted in collaboration with Ersta Hospital.

Ersta Hospital is an expanding specialist hospital with approximately 1,200 employees and an important contributor to healthcare in Region Stockholm. Between 2023 and 2025, the hospital has grown substantially, more than doubling its capacity and showing a clear increase in both healthcare production and research and development activities. Since 2022, Ersta Hospital has been a university healthcare unit, entailing an extensive educational mandate. The hospital offers clinical training for students in the medical, nursing and physiotherapy programs, providing an engaging learning environment closely integrated with clinical practice.

Description of the subject area

At KIDS/Ersta Hospital, current research is primarily conducted within surgery, particularly upper gastrointestinal surgery and colorectal surgery. There has been a focus on bariatric surgery, but there is also ongoing development in enhanced recovery after surgery pathways. The clinical activities include several experienced research supervisors and a well-established research unit, providing favorable conditions for high-quality clinical research.

Your mission

The department and Ersta Hospital now wish to recruit a new professor to lead and further develop the research, particularly within upper gastrointestinal surgery or colorectal surgery. The employment  also includes overall responsibility for undergraduate teaching in surgery at Ersta Hospital. The holder of the employment will also serve as Head of Research and Development at Ersta Hospital.

The employment is divided 50 percent at Karolinska Institutet and 50 percent at the Surgery and Anesthesia Clinic at Ersta Hospital.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated excellent scientific skills, very good pedagogical skills and clinical skills.

The employment will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in surgery at the Department of Surgery and Anesthesia at Ersta Hospital and therefore you must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in surgery, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden

Since the employment includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).

In addition, it is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (2), leadership and collaboration skills (2), and clinical skills (2).

It is furthermore meritorious that you have demonstrated

• Experience of development work within Enhanced Recovery After Surgery pathways for upper gastrointestinal surgery or colorectal surgery.
• Research experience and clinical experience in upper gastrointestinal surgery or colorectal surgery.
