ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY

Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.

YOUR TASKS

  • At least 90% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation
  • Objective: The PhD research aims to elucidate the kinetics and reaction mechanisms of lignin depolymerisation processes, through the development of a comprehensive kinetic model. The ultimate goal is to enable a rational fine‑tuning of reaction conditions to steer product selectivity and process performance.
Context: This PhD project focuses on a novel ultra‑fast, non‑catalytic lignin depolymerisation strategy. Unlike conventional catalytic or thermal depolymerisation approaches, this process operates on extremely short time scales and does not rely on catalysts, resulting in specific reaction pathways and product distributions. Due to the rapid nature and intrinsic complexity of the process, the underlying reaction kinetics and mechanisms remain largely unexplored. A detailed kinetic analysis and mechanistic understanding are therefore essential to identify the dominant reaction pathways and to enable the rational fine‑tuning of reaction conditions toward targeted product formation and improved process control.
  • Within this PhD project, you will:
    • Design and perform kinetic experiments to study lignin depolymerisation under controlled reaction conditions.
    • Quantify reaction rates, product formation, and intermediate species as a function of operating parameters
    • Develop and validate a kinetic reaction model describing the depolymerisation behaviour.
    • Use the kinetic model to elucidate the dominant reaction mechanisms and support the optimisation of reaction conditions.
    • Disseminate research results through scientific publications and conference presentations.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering Technology or a closely related field.
  • You have a strong interest in chemical reaction kinetics and reaction mechanisms, preferably in complex systems.
  • You are interested in both experimental work and kinetic modelling.
  • You have basic experience in or a clear interest in experimental research, such as:
    • kinetic experiments and data analysis,
    • continuous flow reactor operation,
    • analytical techniques (e.g. GPC, GC, NMR).
  • Experience with kinetic modelling and parameter estimation is an asset.
  • Familiarity with modelling or data‑analysis tools (e.g. MATLAB, Python, Aspen, gPROMS, or similar) is a plus.
  • You have an affinity with bio‑based, circular, or sustainable chemistry.
  • You possess a critical and analytical mindset.
  • You have an excellent command of English, both written and spoken.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

INTERESTED?

Apply online through the e-recruitment system before the application deadline (see above). We do not accept late applications or applications that are not submitted through the online system.

Your application must include the following documents:

  • In the field ‘CV’: your CV and a transcript of your academic record (merged into one pdf file)
  • In the field ‘Cover letter’: your application letter in pdf format
  • In the field ‘Diploma’: a transcript of the required degree (if already in your possession). If you have a foreign diploma in a language other than our national languages (Dutch, French or German) or English, please add a translation in one of the mentioned languages.
  • In the field “other documents”: a reference letter, an overview of your study results

Note that the maximum file size for each field is 10 MB.

As Ghent University maintains an equal opportunities and diversity policy, everyone is encouraged to apply for this position.
