PhD Position in Electrocatalysis and Operando Electrochemical Characterization

The Electrochemical Energy Systems Laboratory at ETH Zurich is seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our research on electrocatalytic energy conversion. Our group investigates how electrolyte environments govern reaction mechanisms, kinetics, and product selectivity at electrochemical interfaces. By combining electrochemistry with advanced operando characterization techniques, we uncover fundamental mechanisms that guide the rational design of next-generation electrochemical energy conversion systems.

Project background

Electrochemical energy conversion offers a promising route toward sustainable chemical manufacturing powered by renewable electricity. However, controlling reaction pathways and product selectivity remains a fundamental challenge because electrochemical reactions are governed by complex interfacial processes that are still poorly understood.

In this project, you will investigate how electrolyte environments influence reaction mechanisms in the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) and related electrocatalytic processes. We place a strong emphasis on mechanistic understanding and combine advanced operando characterization techniques, including FTIR, DEMS, EQCM, GC, and, where appropriate, synchrotron-based methods, with detailed electrochemical studies to uncover the fundamental principles governing electrochemical interfaces.

Job description

  • Design and perform electrochemical experiments to investigate electrocatalytic reaction mechanisms
  • Employ advanced operando characterization techniques to probe electrochemical interfaces
  • Analyze and interpret experimental data to develop mechanistic understanding
  • Contribute to the development of new concepts for electrolyte-controlled electrocatalysis
  • Present your work at international conferences and publish your findings in leading scientific journals
  • Collaborate with researchers within the group and with international collaborators

Profile

  • You should hold (or be close to completing) a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or a closely related field
  • We are looking for a highly motivated, curious, and self-driven researcher who enjoys tackling fundamental scientific questions and thrives in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment

Experience in one or more of the following areas is advantageous, but not required:

  • Electrochemistry and/or electrocatalysis
  • In situ or operando characterization techniques
  • Synchrotron-based characterization methods

We offer

  • Your job with impact: Become part of ETH Zurich, which not only supports your professional development, but also actively contributes to positive change in society
  • You can expect numerous benefits, such as public transport season tickets and car sharing, a wide range of sports offered by the ASVZ, childcare and attractive pension benefits
  • You will join a collaborative, inclusive, and intellectually stimulating research environment that values scientific curiosity, creativity, and independence

  • Cover letter with the description of your research achievements and research interests
  • Detailed CV
  • Transcripts of all degrees (English)
  • Names and contact information of at least 2 references
  • Representative published research work (Papers or thesis if possible)

In the field for additional information please specify your MSc and BSc degree information (University, date of the degree, GPA, relevant experience).

Further information about the group can be found on our Website. Questions regarding the position should be directed to Melanie Darugna, [email protected] (no applications).

Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.

This is a full-time position with a tentative starting date of July 15, 2026, or later by mutual agreement.

Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
