PhD Position - Development of in situ Bioprinting Technologies

Articular cartilage injuries are widespread and can increase the risk of early onset osteoarthritis. The fields of tissue engineering and bioprinting are constantly searching for new methods to create biomimetic tissue models which better replicate the organization of native tissues.  Here bioprinting strategies have the potential to revolutionize the functionality of tissues used in regenerative medicine.

The Tissue Engineering and Biofabrication Laboratory (Prof. Marcy Zenobi-Wong) within the Department of Health Sciences & Technolgy (D-HEST) at ETH Zürich in Zurich, Switzerland, uses bioprinting to produce tissues which address unmet clinical needs. The laboratory  has recently developed a light-based 3D printing technique, capable of creating topological cell guiding cues in large scaffolds (> centimeter scale) based on optical modulation instability effect and self-focusing effect on non-linear media (e.g., photosensitive resin). This allows for creating efficient cell guiding microstructures including microfilaments and microchannels in 3D hydrogel constructs within seconds.  In this multi-PI consortium, an in situ printing technique will be developed to treat articular cartilage injuries.

Project background

The goal of this project is to develop a light based printer which can be used directly in the operation room.  This new printer will be able to crosslink photoresins and cells directly into the patient's cartilage defect, thereby promoting regeneration of the joint.

Job description

  • Design, assembly and validation of in situ bioprinting system
  • Assessment of print fidelity
  • Establish and test software-hardware control of the system
  • Optimization of safety, reliability and accuracy of the printer 
  • Integration of multiple printheads to increase functionality of printer
  • Training and maintence of printer for consortium partners

Profile

You have a diploma/M.Sc. degree in mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering with strong motivation to develop the hardware and software behind the next generation of 3D bioprinters. The following skills are sought:

  • 3D printing:  Familiarity with light based and extrusion 3D printers, as well as characterization of 3D printing materials
  • Physics and Optics: Understanding of optics, lasers, diffraction, fiberoptics
  • Hardware Design and Mechatronics: Understanding of communication between devices and communication protocols
  • Programming: Proficiency in python and understanding of basic software engineering
  • Good knowledge of Linux operating system, especially in combination with Raspberry Pi operation and Arduino
  • Motivation to work in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment
  • This project is embedded within a large European consortium, therefore excellent written and oral communciation are essential
