We are looking for a highly skilled and motivated candidate that will study the urban climate and heat island (UHI) effect for current and future climates for different Swiss cities. Due to the UHI effect, the temperatures in urban areas are higher compared to their surrounding rural areas, especially during heat waves. Urbanisation will lead to a further growth and a densification of urban areas, what will in turn increase the UHI intensities. Climate change will additionally increase the temperatures in cities and cause increased frequencies and intensities of heat waves in summer. To implement effective UHI mitigation measures, Swiss cities need to better understand their urban climates and the mechanisms causing local hotspots within their urban environments. In collaboration with some Swiss cities, mesoscale simulations with sub-kilometre resolution using COSMO will be conducted. An urban canopy model is used to account for the effects of the interaction of physical processes between urban surfaces and the urban atmospheric boundary layers. In a recent project we implemented the effect of vegetation into the urban canopy model allowing us to study the impact of vegetation on the urban climate.


You will use the developed numerical models to simulate the urban climate for different Swiss cities for current and future climates, current state and with implementing UHI mitigation measures. First, you will collect the necessary information on the city urban fabric (building geometries, vegetation densities etc.) and process it to the format required by the model . In a second step you will conduct the simulations for mean and extreme weather conditions (e.g. heat waves). The results are analysed in detail to understand the cause of UHI and the formation of local hotspots for different weather conditions. Additionally, you will conduct simulations to study the effectiveness of different UHI mitigation measures that will proposed. Finally, you will communicate the results and discuss these results with cities authorities to come to a global implementation plan.

The candidate should be a communicative engineer with preferentially a strong background in mesoscale climate simulations and/or interest in urban climate. Experience with COSMO is an add-on. The candidate should have a master or PhD degree in environmental, mechanical or civil engineering, physics or equivalent. The candidate should be proficient in English and knowledge of official Swiss language is advantageous.
