We are currently searching for a highly motivated technical assistant who wants to contribute to cutting-edge biomedical research as part of the RESOLUTE project. The public-private partnership RESOLUTE comprises six pharmaceutical companies, one biotech and six academic research institutions, and studies the whole family of SLC membrane transporters (Superti-Furga et al, Nat Rev Drug Discov. 2020). The successful candidate will be part of the Superti-Furga laboratory and work closely with a team of project scientists and technical assistants at CeMM in Vienna. Using hundreds of isogenic cell lines with loss and gain of function for each human solute carrier transporter (SLC), we obtained metabolomic/ionomic, transcriptomic and proteomic large-scale data sets annotated with subcellular localization. You will support the biochemical and functional validation of the most intriguing findings of the large-scale studies as well as develop novel cell-based assays to monitor the activity of SLCs.

Requirements and desired qualifications

  • Degree in life sciences (B.Sc., M.Sc., Mag., DI, MTA, CTA)
  • Prior wet-lab and mammalian cell culture experience
  • General knowledge of molecular biology techniques
  • Excellent ability to generate and implement Standard Operating Procedures
  • High accuracy and reliability
  • Exceptional social skills and ability to work in an international team
  • Written and oral communication skills in English

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Cell culture maintenance
  • Performance of different cell-based assays
  • Technology development as team effort with project scientists
  • Detailed experimental documentation
  • Writing of Standard Operating Procedures
  • Contribution to lab management, training of new lab members, and scientific publications

The RESOLUTE Consortium

Starting on July 1st of 2018, the RESOLUTE consortium is supported by the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI, www.imi.europa.eu) with 13 partners from academia and the pharmaceutical industry and is coordinated by the Superti-Furga laboratory. The RESOLUTE consortium’s mission is to de-orphanize human SLC transporters at a large scale and unlock them as potential pharmacological targets (Superti-Furga et al, Nat Rev Drug Discov. 2020). With a well-defined action plan, we are currently pushing towards a paradigm-shift in the science of human cellular transporters by creating a massive, historical advance in knowledge on hundreds of individual transporters and the way they act together.

The Superti-Furga Laboratory

The Superti-Furga group (http://superti-furga-lab.at/) is composed of an international and highly productive team of more than 30 scientists. As a leader in the field, the laboratory investigates how cells and biological systems in general manage access to the environment through cellular transport. In particular how access to nutrients and energy source is tuned to metabolism and need of individual cell types. Moreover, the lab has pioneered approaches for functional precision medicine. The laboratory operates on a truly multidisciplinary basis and involves functional genomics and proteomics, structural analysis, chemical biology, high-content imaging, bioinformatics and physiology, reflecting the blend of expertise of the laboratory members (Heinz et al, Nature. 2020; Girardi et al, Nat Chem Biol. 2020; Girardi et al, Nat Commun. 2020; Li et al, Nat Metab. 2021; Pemovska et al, Nat Commun. 2021).

About the Institute

The mission of CeMM, the Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences is to achieve maximum scientific innovation in molecular medicine to improve healthcare. At CeMM, an international and creative team of scientists and medical doctors pursues free-minded basic life science research in a large and vibrant hospital environment of outstanding medical tradition and practice. CeMM’s research is based on post-genomic technologies and focuses on societally important diseases, such as immune disorders and infections, cancer and metabolic disorders. CeMM operates in a unique mode of super-cooperation, connecting biology with medicine, experiments with computation, discovery with translation, and science with society and the arts. CeMM discovers and develops technologies to explore human biology with the purpose of defeating disease at its roots. Because Science is our Medicine! CeMM trains a modern blend of biomedical scientists and is located at the campus of the General Hospital and the Medical University of Vienna. More than 150 people from 45 nationalities are working at CeMM. CeMM promotes equal opportunity and harbors a mix of different talents, backgrounds, competences, and interests.
