At the Faculty of Engineering Technology at the University of Twente additive manufacturing is one of the major research themes. Several departments of this faculty have joined forces to explore multi-material powder bed fusion.

Various (fundamental) aspects of Multi-metal PBF will be explored, with a special emphasis on the relationship between production conditions, melt pool dynamics, material properties, and the product’s mechanical properties. Furthermore, optimization and validation of the processing strategies for the (metallurgical) interface zones is one of the expected results of this project. The research will include both experimentation, material research as well as simulation of the interface phenomena and will be related to the ongoing research within the chairs/departments of Advanced Manufacturing, Laser Processing, Production Technology, and Multiscale Mechanics

Your profile

We are looking for candidates with previous experience in process optimization for additive manufacturing processes. Previous experience with metal powder bed fusion, material characterization and experimental research is a pre-requisite. The applicant is encouraged to lead the research project, will publish in reputable journals, and should be the linking pin between the 4 research chairs.

  • Candidates have a MSc degree in or related to Mechanical Engineering, or Physics or Material Science (or closely related discipline) with a proven curiosity on additive manufacturing and/or material science and/or process simulation.
  • Candidates should have a strong theoretical and experimental background on additive manufacturing process development
  • Knowledge of materials characterization (such as SEM, EDX, EBSD), heat transfer, and laser/material interaction are desirable.
  • Excellent technical writing skills
  • You have strong analytical skills.
  • You have the ability to work independently.
  • Candidates are expected to be good team players and work in an international team with experts from various fields of engineering.
  • You have excellent communication skills and are proficient in English, both spoken and written

  • A starting salary of €2.443,- gross per month in the first year and increasing to €3.122,- gross per month in the fourth year.
