We are seeking to recruit a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Predictive Community Ecology Group at the Department of Biological and Environmental Science starting on August 4, 2025, or as agreed for a fixed term of 28 months.

The post-doctoral researcher will join a project (funded by the Research Council of Finland) about the roles of soil fauna in the soil carbon cycling processes (PI: Sten Anslan). The main task of a postdoctoral researcher is associated with soil microarthropod experiments to quantify the effect of soil fauna in soil processes related to carbon cycling, which includes data collection on soil chemistry, respiration, microbial biomass, microbial carbon use efficiency, and enzyme activities.


Who we are looking for

Expected qualifications of a candidate include:

  • PhD in Soil Science, Environmental Science, Ecology, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with techniques such as soil respiration measurements, carbon flux analysis, microbial carbon use efficiency.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience in handling complex datasets.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Very good writing and oral communication skills in English.

The duties, qualification requirements, and language skills of a postdoctoral researcher are stipulated by the University of Jyväskylä Regulations and language skills guidelines. The PhD degree required for the position must have been completed before the starting date. A trial period of six months will be used in the beginning of the employment.

The salary for a Postdoctoral Researcher is determined based on the task-specific demand level 5–6 of the university salary system for teaching and research staff. The salary range will be approximately 3500-4070 €/month (gross income), depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.

Department of Biological and Environmental Science

The research in the Department of Biological and Environmental Science focuses on three core areas: evolutionary biology, natural resources and environment, and biological nanoscience. The Department building, Ambiotica, is an integral part of the University of Jyväskylä's Ylistönrinne Mathematics and Science Research Complex, which includes buildings of chemistry, physics and nanoscience. Ambiotica houses high quality laboratories for bioscience and experimental facilities for a wide range of biological and chemical analyses as well as highly motivated laboratory personnel.
