The Department of Electromechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Applied Engineering is looking for a full-time (100%) researcher in the field of computer vision for maritime security
Position
- You will work actively on the preparation and defence of a PhD thesis Advanced Image Processing for Maritime Drone Surveillance. The PhD focuses on developing advanced image processing algorithms for real-time ship detection using drones equipped with multi-sensor cameras. The project targets challenging conditions such as fog, rain, and night. As part of the MARISPEC project, the candidate will design machine learning techniques for multi-wavelength sensor data (infrared, visible, and night vision) to enhance detection accuracy. The candidate will collaborate closely with Xenics (camera technology) and DroneMatrix (drone integration), and participate in field testing to optimize the system for maritime surveillance applications. The role offers hands-on experience in AI, sensor fusion, and real-world drone applications. - You will help coordinate research project proposals in the field of imaging for maritime applications and contribute to attracting external funding.
- You will support the execution of projects on imaging with the industry.
- You will assist in the supervision of Master’s students.
Profile
- You hold a Master degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or you will have obtained it by the time you start work.
- You can work in a group as well as on your own initiative.
- You have knowledge in machine learning for vision. Hands-on experience with image acquisitions and different types of cameras (visible, infrared) is highly valued.
- You can demonstrate excellent study results.
- Your research qualities are in line with the faculty and university research policies.
- You have good written and spoken communication skills. You can speak and write fluently in English. Knowledge of the Dutch language is not required (spoken nor written).
- You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation.

- The planned start date is 1st December 2024 or as soon as possible after that date.
- Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scale for an assistant in the Contract Research Staff category (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
- You will receive ecocheques, Internet-connectivity allowance, a group insurance, an income protection insurance, and a bicycle allowance or a full reimbursement of public transport costs for commuting.
- You will do most of your work at Campus Groenenborger in a dynamic and stimulating working environment.
