​We are looking for a research unit head with a proven track record in the field of functional thin films who will serve as a leader and promoter of the highest quality, industry-ready research in the field of 
semiconductor materials.


  • Management and further development of the Thin Film Technologies research unit in the division Microsystems.
  • Corporate and profit responsibility.
  • Staff responsibility for the research unit including scientific support and supervision of an international group of researchers from Junior to Staff Scientists level.
  • Project initiation and management.
  • International partner acquisition and network support.
  • Shaping the research program of this new unit and creating project portfolios together with division head.
  • Growing the research unit towards research excellence and economic impact.
  • Interacting with people and sustain a wide personal network.
  • Liaison with different research units within SAL and envisioning of an overall thin film/materials roadmap.


  • Lead the Thin Film Technologies research unit to a world-class level in the field.
  • Actively steer the research unit’s future plans, defining research topics, unit organization, investments in resources, infrastructures, and laboratories.
  • Definition, setup, and management of cooperative and funded research projects.
  • Initiate a close cooperation and support of scientific and industrial project partners in cooperative research projects.
  • Mentor and manage a team of research scientists working on thin-film materials.
  • Prepare a materials deposition strategy and provide a 5- to 10-year R&D outlook.
  • Dissemination of research results in respected conferences and journals.
  • Act as a primary technical interface to discuss new material, materials characterization, and process challenges, both within and outside SAL.


  • University degree and expert knowledge related to at least one of the following topics: 
    Materials Science/Engineering,       
    Applied Physics, 
    Chemical Engineering, and other allied fields.
  • Habilitation in a related field is a plus.
  • Thorough knowledge and working experience in electronic materials and systems, especially in the field of ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and magnetic materials.
  • Awareness of the emerging trends in the field of electronic materials (e.g. 2D materials, superconductors etc.) and their applications in e.g. microelectromechanical systems or quantum devices.
  • Strong scientific / research track record evidenced by publications, invited lectures or patents on related fields.
  • Multi-year experience in acquisition and guidance of international funding projects and scientific cooperative research.
  • Active industrial and academic network.
  • Leadership qualities with the ability to inspire, promote and motivate young, early career as well as experienced scientists.
  • Proven record of at least 5 years of previous experience of being group leader and multicultural team.
  • Minimum 10 years of having experience in managing international project.
  • Proactive and creative independent thinking, enjoy working in international teams.
  • Ability to lead and supervise a team in a sensitive and inspiring manner.
  • Excellent oral and written presentation skills.

This position is subject to the Collective Agreement for employees in non-university research (Research CA) in occupational group G (G1 salary = EUR 4.582, paid 14 times a year). Your actual salary depends on your experience and qualifications. We offer a salary in the range between EUR 85.000 to EUR 95.000 (annual, based on an All-in contract and bonus).


​SAL is a fast-growing organization that is on the way to become a world-class R&D partner for industry in the field of electronic based systems. 
SAL’s Thin Film Technologies research unit aims to bridge the gap between fundamental thin-films research with advanced deposition technologies focusing on major industrial applications (200mm wafer size) with the ability to create ultra-high performance thin films for the manufacturing of next generation of MEMS and sensor as a building block of future electronic devices. 
This includes advanced computational, experimental, and characterization technologies to develop emerging thin film material systems and their integration into MEMS and microelectronic components. 
The Thin Film Technologies Research Unit is part of the newly founded Division Microsystems (MST) and is responsible for developing functional thin-films materials, for MEMS and other 
microelectronic components for related industrial applications in collaboration with company and research partners in line with latest research trends.
