Work tasks

Northern forest and peatland ecosystems are one of the worlds largest land-based carbon (C) sink, storing high amounts of C in soil organic matter (SOM). With climate change, these ecosystems may turn from C sinks into sources, releasing C from soil thereby accelerating global warming. This calls for understanding of mechanisms behind SOM stabilization. Would you like to solve the mystery of SOM stabilization?
We are looking for a PhD student to join multidisciplinary (biogeochemistry, microbiology, plant biochemistry) plant-soil-microbe interaction group in Luke. This position is an excellent opportunity to develop a scientific career and work with leading groups in the field across Europe. The person will be involved in ongoing Luke projects studying plant and soil processes in forest and peatlands under climate change.

A personnel security clearance may be obtained for a person chosen for an office or a post with his or her consent (Security Clearance Act 726/2014). For more information on the security clearance procedure and the rights of the person subject to clearance, visit www.supo.fi

Qualifications

We expect that the applicant has the following qualifications:
- MSc degree in plant physiology, chemistry, biochemistry, soil science, biology or similar
- in-depth knowledge about plant biochemical cycles and cycles of C and nutrients
- hands-on experience with gas and liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, spectrophotometry
- experience in measurements of plant primary and secondary compounds, enzymes, markers of plant biotic and abiotic stress
-experience in measurements of soil compounds and C and N pools, and the use of stable isotopes (C, N)
- experience in measurements of soil microbial markers (i.e. enzymes, microbial biomass)
The successful applicant should possess good co-operational and communication skills. Excellent skills in oral and written English are required.
