Society is getting more digitalized. This entails great opportunities, but also novel threats. One rapidly growing novel tool for cyber risk management is cyber insurance. Its promise is great: better understanding of risks, appropriate incentives for risk management, and protection for companies against high-impact-low-probability risks that are otherwise difficult to handle. However, there are also many remaining issues to be solved: lack of actuarial data, accumulation risks that are difficult for insurers to manage, and lack of coverage for many risks that cannot be properly assessed. This research project aims to improve cyber insurance by designing a threat modeling and attack simulation language, insuranceLang, to be used by insurers for more precise risk assessment, better understanding of risk-reducing measures, and insights into risks that have been uninsurable until now. The project thus resides at the intersection of cyber security and economic risk management; an exciting area which is growing in importance.
The successful applicant is expected to have research expertise either within cyber security or within other quantitative risk management fields such as economics, finance, statistics or actuarial science. As the project aims to collaborate with the insurance industry, it is important that you have collaborative abilities, and experience from work in insurance is an advantage. As the project has high scientific aspirations, the ability to independently come up with research ideas, investigate and publish them is much valued. Though the position will mostly include research, some teaching aligned to this research may also be included, so teaching ability is also a requirement, though it is given less importance for this position. Finally, the successful applicant should have an awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality.
