Job description

Integrated Transport Research Lab, ITRL, is a research center at KTH in collaboration with Scania and Ericsson with the aim of developing and demonstrating new concepts for sustainable mobility. At ITRL we have a system perspective, where we integrate knowledge and research from various disciplines at KTH. Read more about ITRL here: https://www.itrl.kth.se/.  

An important area for future sustainable transport is new technology, such as self-propelled vehicles, and their impact on the transport system, travel habits, technology needs, business models, economics, etc. At ITRL, several projects are carried out where new mobility services based entirely or partly on self-propelled vehicles are implemented and tested in both urban and non-urban areas.

In order to understand the impact of the new technology on environment, economy and society, an important puzzle piece is to analyze and evaluate the impact of ongoing projects from an integrated system perspective. Among the interesting effects are the impact on accessibility and accessibility of the traffic system, importance for maintenance and infrastructure, impact on business ecosystems, urban planning, and environmental impacts.

The duties include doctoral studies in system effects of new mobility concepts such as self-driving vehicles and mobility services, focusing on urban and suburban environmental estates. Research will take an integrated approach, and take multiple perspectives (e.g. sustainability, usability, technology, business) into account, and includes both method acquisition and system effect analysis. The position will lead to a doctorate.

The doctoral studies include literature studies, methodological development and modeling at system level, analysis of results, writing scientific publications, presentation at national and international conferences, and implementation of postgraduate courses. The research will be conducted partly in the framework of ongoing projects at ITRL, where these projects will be used as case studies. The doctoral student will also contribute to the Center's development, corresponding to 20% of the working hours. The employment is full-time.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position, you have a M.Sc. degree within an area relevant to the service. You are communicative in English, both oral and written, and have a good ability of understanding and analyzing system-level challenges. It is also meritorious if you have:  

  • good communicative skills in Swedish, spoken and written
  • experience in analysis and method development to understand system effects
  • knowledge of system-level modeling and programming
  • experience in the mobility or transport industry
  • experience of independent project work in collaborative projects
  • taken research preparatory courses

We are looking for a person with a good cooperative ability, where you can cooperate with researchers from different disciplines as well as with partners from industry and other authorities. Since you will present your research results in different forums, your communicative ability - both oral and written - is very important, where you have the ability to customize your presentation to the audience you face. Your independence means that you drive and take your own initiative to make your work progress. You are analytical when reviewing texts, results, and other types of information that you will be expected to process in the service. Furthermore, it is advantageous if you are structured and organized in your work, where you can independently plan and follow up your work.
