Job description

Thematic and research challenges

The integration of connected objects into the Internet at large scale raises many challenges: how to ensure that they work properly? How can they communicate with other connected equipment? How to ensure that they are up-to-date? Is it sustainable and useful? This continuous integration is part of the evolution of computer networks and the Internet, and contributes to a lasting change in networks and their uses.

More specifically, two major issues have been identified around the Internet of Things: (i) interoperability with the Internet, taking into account the specificities of objects (constrained in terms of energy and computing capacity, for example) and contributing to the drafting of standards, (ii) instantiating several levels of quality of service according to usage, in particular by designing protocols to reduce and limit latency. Depending on the targeted field of application, other contributions will be possible, for example the co-optimisation of energy networks and the Internet of Things in the context of smart grids.

Eco-system and context

IMT Atlantique internationally recognized for the quality of its research, is a leading technological university under the authority of the Ministry of Industry and Digital Technologies, ranked in the three main international rankings (THE, SHANGHAI, QS).

IMT Atlantique has privileged relationships with major industrial national and international partners, as well as a dense network of SMEs, start-ups, and innovation networks. With 290 permanent faculty members, 2000 students among which 300 PhD students, IMT Atlantique produces every year 1000 publications and raises 18M€ of research funding.

The position is open on the campus of Rennes within the SRCD (Network Systems, Cybersecurity and Digital Law) department.

Multidisciplinary, it is structured around transversal axes that structure research, teaching and innovation. These areas are:

- data, making it available and sharing it

- the ecological transition, mainly in the context of digital technology

- the security of systems and networks.

In addition, our evolutionary approach allows us to be at the heart of standardization committees (particularly interesting productions in the IETF and ISO) and allows us to be close to the economic sector and to have important transfers to industry.

The aim of this recruitment is to consolidate the strategic topic of the Internet of Things within the department, both in terms of training and research. In particular, it will strengthen the "Computer Science and Networks" discipline component, with expertise in protocols and network architectures. The research will be carried out within the UMR 6074 IRISA, in one of the teams of Department 2 (Networks, Telecommunications and Services).

Education

The education program of IMT Atlantique has been recognized as amongst the most innovative in French High Education and Research and offers large possibilities of developing innovative engineering curriculum and educational approach.

The candidate will contribute to the teaching “Computer Science and Neworks”. They will be invited to propose related new educational projects, programs and methodologies, especially inspired by and supported by industrial requirements and partnerships.
