Job description

The research group EELAB / Lemcko is affiliated with Ghent University and located on the UGent campus in Kortrijk. EELAB/Lemcko is specialized in Power Quality, Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), smart µGrids and renewable energy. You can find more info on www.ugent.be/ea/eemmecs/lemcko/en

The research group CAS is affiliated with Ghent University and located on the UGent. 

Job description 
Design of active filters in the frequency range 2 – 500 kHz 
Within the assignment you conduct scientific research in the field of power quality, high frequency power quality and EMC. The research topic focusses on power conversions harmonics in the frequency range 2 to 500 kHz, mainly caused by lighting applications, PV, storage and EV-chargers. You work towards the concept of active filters in this frequency range. You publish your results. Additionally, you will support the Lemcko and CAS staff in teaching and lab sessions. 

Tasks: 

  • You study the behaviour of power conversion harmonics in the low voltage grid 
  • You develop the concept of an active filter, both single and three-phase 
  • You build a working prototype and test this under real circumstances. 
  • You write scientific publications and contribute to project reporting. 
  • You supervise bachelor and M.Sc. students during projects and practical courses related to your own research.

Job profile

  • You have one of the following Master degrees with specialization: 
    - Master of Science in Electromechanical Engineering (subject Electrical power engineering), Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering or Applied Physics 
    - Master of Science in Engineering technology – Electronic Engineering or Electrical Engineering 
    - Equivalent Master in Electronics or Electrotechnics
  • You are highly motivated, self-critical, you work with rigour and attention to detail, and you work accurately 
  • Preliminary knowledge of FPGA design (Verilog, VHDL, Vivado) is an asset 
  • A good knowledge of Matlab, Python and Latex is an asset 
  • You have a strong interest in power quality, EMC and electronics 
  • You combine being an active team player with a strong sense of autonomy and responsibility. 
  • You have good communication and writing skills and have an excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.

  • We offer you a PhD scholarship as a contractual recruitment of 1 year, with another 3 years after positive evaluation. During the first period, you will also apply (when eligible, and in collaboration with your promoters) for additional scholarship funding. Your appointment will start by 01/09/2021 at the earliest. The aim is to obtain a doctoral degree. 
  • You will receive a PhD scholarship according to the general conditions at Ghent University. The tax-free scholarship includes full social security coverage.
