The Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (RICH) and Ghent University
1 full-time lecturer - scientific collaborator
for the FEDTWIN project
This function is part of the FEDTWIN program of federal science policy of Belgium, which aims to combine and mutually reinforce the expertise of a federal scientific institution and a university by financing a long-term research project. The ISOHERITAGE project is a joint initiative of the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (RICH) and Ghent University (UGENT). Prof. Pascal Boeckx and Dr. Mathieu Boudin are the promoters.
The position to be filled consists of a half-time position at the RICH and a half-time position at UGENT. The candidate should be willing to hold both half-time positions and should also apply for both positions. It is not possible to apply for only one of the two half-time positions.
ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY
Ghent University (UGENT) is one of the most important education and research institutions in the “Low Countries”. More than 9,000 employees and 41,000 students live up to the motto "Dare to Think" on a daily basis. Quality education, internationally appreciated research and a pluralistic social responsibility characterize UGent's mission.
ABOUT THE ROYAL INSTITUTE FOR CULTURAL HERITAGE
The Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (RICH) is responsible for the documentation, scientific study, conservation and valorization of the country's artistic and cultural heritage and has a research mission and a public service mission. The Department Laboratories mainly contributes to this by identifying the materials of which the heritage object is composed and by studying the degradation of these materials. These results are relevant for technical art-historical studies and crucial for art conservation.
The RICH radiocarbon dating lab has more than 60 years of experience in the field and is the only laboratory in Belgium with an AMS for radiocarbon dating.
PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT
Description of the function:
This Fed-Twin allows to unite the expertise of three Ghent University research groups and the Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory of the Royal Institute of Cultural Heritage and, hence, proposes an interdisciplinary research field. The combined expertise and instrumentation available at the Atomic & Mass Spectrometry (A&MS) research group, at the Isotope Bioscience Laboratory (ISOFYS), and at the Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory is fully complementary and unique at an international level. In addition, the West-European Archaeology research group of UGent will provide archaeological expertise for adequate interpretation of archeological and cultural heritage context. The overall objective of the Fed-Twin is to advance cultural heritage research in Belgium via dedicated integration of complementary state-of-the-art isotopic provenance and tracing tools.
The short-term the focus of the Fed-Twin is on pottery in the Scheldt basin (Belgium). The aim is to gain information on origin, use (i.e., food sources) and diffusion (i.e., trade) of pottery. It is expected that the developed of analytical methods for elemental, molecular and isotopic characterization will also be applicable to provenance determination of other cultural objects in order to gain information about origin, exchange and trade networks. The long-term objectives are: 1) provenance studies of iron artefacts to better understand the socio-economic organization of ancient societies, and 2), stable isotope and radio-carbon analyses of human remains and its find context for paleodietary reconstruction.
