Engineer for Design in Process Engineering in the Field of Hydrogen and LOHC

Your Job:

The department “Chemical Hydrogen Storage”, in which you will be assigned at HI ERN, is headed by Prof. Dr. Peter Wasserscheid. It focuses on the further development of a technology for the storage and release of hydrogen using chemical hydrogen carriers (Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier – LOHC for short) with the goal of a sustainable energy economy. As the LOHC system, perhydro-benzyltoluene / benzyltoluene is in particular focus. In the field of chemical hydrogen storage using the aforementioned LOHC system, HI ERN is a world leader and carries out outstanding research work.

The project “Emission-free and highly emission-reduced rail transport on non-electrified tracks”, on which we will work together, is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy and aims at demonstrating the LOHC technology as the energy supply unit of a locomotive.

In the team “Process Units”, headed by Dr.-Ing. Julian Kadar, the scaling of experimental systems from laboratory scale to the above-mentioned technical application will be developed and test rigs for the experimental testing of these will be set up. The efficient interaction of components such as reactor, fuel cell, cooling and heating units and pumps is essential, especially for mobile applications.

Your tasks in this exciting area:

  • Participation in the development of process engineering systems for the release of hydrogen from LOHCs
  • Development and design of 3D topologies for piping design
  • Design of pressure vessels as chemical reactors, heat exchangers or tanks including stress analysis and aspects of fluid mechanics
  • Preparation of specifications for external purchasing and coordination of these orders
  • Accompaniment of the preparation of safety concepts according to the applicable technical regulations (e.g. DGRL, ArbSchG, BetrSichV, ATEX)
  • Set-up, maintenance, and operation of test facilities in the laboratory and on the mobile platform

Your Profile:

  • Very good scientific or technical university degree in the fields of mechanical engineering, process engineering, energy engineering, chemical engineering, or a comparable discipline
  • Experience in the field of mechanical design engineering, ideally with process plants and pressure vessels (EN 13445)
  • Understanding of P&I process flow diagrams
  • Software skills in Autodesk Inventor or other 3D CAD programs
  • Software knowledge in Microsoft Visio (P&ID process flow diagrams); COMSOL (stress analysis) is an advantage
  • Very good German and good English skills, both written and spoken
