Achieving a greenhouse gas-neutral energy supply is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. At the Institute of Energy and Climate Research – Techno-Economic Systems Analysis (IEK-3) – we use integrated models to explore how possible cost-effective transformation strategies must be designed to achieve this. To strengthen our team we are looking for a

Postdoc – Global Energy Systems Modeling

Your Job:

To support the transformation of the global energy system, orientation knowledge for politics, industry, and society is needed. Help us to further develop open source decision support models for the energy transition and, thus, generate new insights.

Your main area of responsibility will be the modeling of the global energy transition using the FINE model framework ( Thereby, there is a large scope to determine the exact research direction in joint consultation. In addition, you will be expected to support project management and acquisition tasks.

In addition, we expect you to:

  • contribute to the further development of the FINE model framework
  • develop approaches to keep global energy system models computable as well
  • implement innovative ideas for the analysis and visualization of large sets of results
  • supervise students and PhD students
  • present your research results in the best possible way at conferences and in scientific journals

Your Profile:

  • Excellent master’s degree in science or engineering or a comparable field of study
  • Doctorate in the field of energy systems modeling
  • Very good knowledge of energy technologies and economics
  • Basic knowledge of mathematical optimization methods
  • Programming skills, ideally in Python
  • Fluency in written and spoken English; knowledge of German advantageous
  • Distinct ability to work in a team as well as the ability to work cooperatively
  • Independent and analytical way of working
