Doctoral Student in the field of Nanomagnetic Robotics

ETH Zurich is one of the world’s leading universities specializing in science and technology. We are renowned for our excellent education, cutting-edge fundamental research and direct transfer of new knowledge into society. Over 30,000 people from more than 120 countries find our university to be a place that promotes independent thinking and an environment that inspires excellence. Located in the heart of Europe, yet forging connections all over the world, we work together to develop solutions for the global challenges of today and tomorrow.

Project background

The Laboratory for Mesoscopic Systems based at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is a joint laboratory between the ETH Zurich and the Paul Scherrer Institute, which is the largest research center for the natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland. The current research focus is the investigation of novel magnetic systems at the mesoscopic scale making use of the clean rooms and large-scale facilities at the Paul Scherrer Institute, and fostering synergies with the Department of Materials (ETH Zurich). We would like to hire a Doctoral Student in the field of nanomagnetic robotics.

Job description

You will be responsible for creating novel microscale robots incorporating nanomagnets that can be actuated in a magnetic field. The microscale robots will be fabricated using cleanroom processes and their behaviour will be tracked with a dedicated optical microscope. Furthermore, you will develop new methods to control the motion of the robots in different environments and demonstrate different, multidisciplinary applications. You will work in Mesoscopic Systems joint laboratory between the Department of Materials, ETH Zurich and Paul Scherrer Institute.

Your profile

You have a master degree in physics, material science, mechanical engineering or a related field and enjoy practical work. Knowledge of magnetism and nanofabrication is beneficial. As an enthusiastic researcher, you like teamwork and have a flexible approach to working between different laboratories.

We offer

ETH Zurich is a family-friendly employer with excellent working conditions. You can look forward to an exciting working environment, cultural diversity and attractive offers and benefits.
