Programming Student Assistant: Python & Data Science

Our research group on Law, Economics and Data Science at the Center for Law & Economics is looking for a student assistant with Python skills and an interest in data science to assist with empirical research on law and economics. The applicant should have intermediate to advanced Python experience, with the following skills considered desirable:

  1. Data checks, cleaning, and merging (pandas)
  2. Data summary and visualization in pandas and matplotlib (or seaborn, ggplot, etc)
  3. Text mining and natural language processing (NLTK, spaCy, etc.)
  4. Web scraping (urllib, robobrowser)
  5. Machine learning (sklearn)
  6. Deep learning (Keras, TensorFlow, Edward, etc.)
  7. Database management (psycopg2, django)
  8. Software collaboration (Jupyter notebooks, GitHub)

The research investigates empirical questions in law and economics, public economics, and political economy, with a focus on text analysis of legal and political documents. Topics include the determinants and consequences of the behavior of judges, politicians, and voters.

Job description

Within our team, you will have the opportunity to work in close connection with ETH Scientific IT services (a highly diverse group of data science experts, see www.sis.id.ethz.ch). You will develop your Python and Data Science skills using state-of-the-art technologies (Jupyter Notebook, pandas).

Your profile

You should have strong Python programming skills and a confirmed interest in Data Science. Ideally, you are a student in computer science, economics or a related discipline. Some background in statistics and/or an interest in learning econometrics to contribute to the actual statistical analysis (using, e.g., statsmodels or Stata) would be a plus but not formally required.

Work hours are flexible and negotiable, but during the semester subject to a regulatory maximum of 15 hours per week. To be eligible for this position, you must be an enrolled student at ETH Zurich, University of Zurich, or another Swiss institution.
