ETH Zurich is one of the leading universities of the world with a strong focus on science and engineering. In 2010 it established the Singapore-ETH Centre (SEC) in collaboration with the National Research Foundation (NRF) to do interdisciplinary research on pressing problems. In collaboration with the National University of Singapore (NUS), the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), SEC is undertaking a research programme on "Future Resilient Systems". The FRS addresses the challenges with critical infrastructure systems that provide essential services to modern societies, which is of particular importance to innovation-driven economies like Singapore and Switzerland. Within this framework we are announcing the following job opening.
The postdoc researcher will investigate the impact of risks stemming from new technologies (i.e. social media platforms, AI systems, autonomous vehicles, etc.) and financial systems (i.e. cryptocurrencies, ETFs, algorithmic trading, etc.) on human decision-making. The overarching goal of this interdisciplinary project is to identify potential risks stemming from rapidly-developing technologies, identify profiles of individuals that are particularly prone to these risks and propose regulatory, educational and preventive measures that would contribute to creating a resilient society. Methodologies used in this research project include psychometric measures, behavioral-economic tasks, surveys, laboratory and field experiments, cognitive modelling, as well as model-based and agent-based simulations. The project will take a behavior economics / behavior finance / judgment & decision making perspective on increasing resilience of individuals, groups and societies.
A successful candidate would plan, coordinate and conduct research work together with two PhD students based in Singapore and the behavioral finance research team in Zurich. Therefore, good research and management skills, as well as the ability to work independently are a must. The post-doctoral researcher will be co-supervised by Prof. Christoph Hoelscher and Dr. Sandra Andraszewicz from the Chair of Cognitive Science at ETH Zurich, as well as receive guidance by Prof. George Christopoulus and Prof. Yohannes Eko Riyanto from Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.
Please note that the employment will be at the Singapore-ETH Centre and local working regulations will apply. Occasional visits to Zurich, Switzerland, will be expected. Further integration with the team of the Chair of Cognitive Science at ETH Zurich can be developed over time. The job is limited to two years. The workplace is Singapore.
You are a psychologist, cognitive scientist, behavioral economist or other behavioral scientist interested in finance, new technologies and cognition. You have well-grounded experience in planning and conducting behavioral scientific studies. You are fluent in at least one programming language (R, Python, Matlab, or similar) and you have excellent data analytics skills. Machine learning knowledge is a plus. You are based in Singapore or you are willing to relocate to Singapore for at least two years.
We look forward to receiving your online application including the following documents: a letter of motivation, a CV, electronic copies of your academic diplomas and certificates, and contact details for at least 2 referees. Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
