The Soil Chemistry Group of Prof. Ruben Kretzschmar, Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics, Department of Environmental Systems Science, invites applications for a postdoctoral scientist position in the field of soil environmental geochemistry. The appointment is initially for 2 years, but may be extended in case of excellent performance. The ideal starting date is in summer 2020 (negotiable).
Our research focuses on biogeochemical cycles of essential and potentially toxic trace elements in the environment and their coupling with major elements such as carbon, iron, manganese, and sulfur. Our research is process-oriented, and includes both field and laboratory studies using natural samples and model systems. We use a variety of advanced analytical and spectroscopic techniques available in our institute or at synchrotron facilities.
The successful applicant will conduct process-oriented research on the speciation and fate of mercury in organic-rich soils of alpine and/or Nordic regions, in particular the coupling of Hg speciation with the cycling of carbon, sulfur, and iron. The research will be conducted in coordination with group members and collaborators. Both field sampling and experimental work will be required, in addition to speciation of mercury using hyphenated GC-ICP-MS methods and other advanced analytical techniques. The aim of the research is to improve our understanding of the speciation and fate of mercury in such soils as affected by climate change. In addition to research, the successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to the group’s teaching in soil science at the Bachelor level.
The successful applicant should possess a strong academic background in general soil science and environmental geochemistry in relation to trace elements, as well as a documented record of previous research accomplishments in related fields. Relevant experience in analytical chemistry, speciation analysis, isotope analysis, spectroscopy, mineralogy, electron microscopy, microbiology, and/or biogeochemical modelling, are highly valued. Some experience with soil-related field work is also expected.
We look forward to receiving your online application including an application letter, curriculum vitae including publication list, 1-page research statement describing your research interests and career objectives, copies of transcripts of BSc, MSc, and PhD degrees, and contact information for three references. The application review will begin on April 1, 2020, and continue until the position is filled (and this advertisement is online).
Please note that we exclusively accept applications submitted through our online application portal. Applications via email or postal services will not be considered.
Further information about our research group and the institute can be found on our website www.soilchem.ethz.ch. Questions regarding the position should be directed to Prof. Ruben Kretzschmar, email firstname.lastname@example.org (no applications).
