PhD student in Bioanalytics/Microfluidics

The Bioanalytics Group in Basel at ETH Zurich develops novel analytical methods for biological studies. To strengthen our interdisciplinary team, we are currently offering a positions for a
PhD student in Bioanalytics/Microfluidics
with background in Analytical Chemistry, Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bio-/ Chemical/Biomedical Engineering or related fields.
The PhD project aims at the development of a microfluidic platform for high-throughput analysis of biochemical reactions and cell-secreted compounds. High-throughput screening methods are required to find, test and analyze new compounds and drugs. To address this challenge, we employ droplet microfluidics, which allows for creation of tiny reaction vessels at high frequency of up to several kHz. The resulting emulsion has an excellent monodispersity, with droplet volumes in the range of pico- or few nanoliters. The technique is commonly used in combination with fluorescence spectroscopy. In addition, we employ mass spectrometry for more detailed analysis of the enclosed compounds or reaction products. The goals of the PhD project are the technological improvement of our recently developed platform as well as its application for biological questions in the field of single-cell analysis and drug screening.
The combination of biological and technological aspects is central in our group. A possible candidate should have strong disposition to learn and improve novel methods, and should be very open to different research disciplines. A strong background in analytical chemistry/analytical methods is required, particularly experiences with mass spectrometry. Previous experiences in the field of microfluidics/lab-on-chip technology are helpful.
We offer the successful candidate an intellectually challenging position in the inspiring atmosphere of an interdisciplinary team, and the prospect to obtain a PhD degree from ETH Zurich. Advanced training in different related fields and participation at international conferences is highly encouraged.
