Empa - the place where innovation starts
Empa is the research institute for materials science and technology of the ETH Domain and conducts cutting-edge research for the benefit of industry and the well-being of society.
Our Laboratory for Mechanics of Materials and Nanostructures is looking for a
You will work both on research projects funded by the Commission of Technology and Innovation and basic science projects in the field of electron microscopy with a focus on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron backscatter diffraction techniques (EBSD). You’ll exploit state of the art TEM techniques such as HRTEM, EELS, EDS and STEM and you’ll develop in-situ high resolution electron backscatter diffraction (HR-EBSD) and transmission EBSD (TKD) techniques to characterize the microstructure and the deformation mechanism of materials and coatings. You will work in close collaboration with several groups working in the field of synthesis of architectured composite materials such as multilayered thin films, galvanoformed and 3D printed microcomponents.
You must hold a PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics or similar. A high level of motivation to work in international and multidisciplinary research teams is essential. Knowledge of English (oral and written) is important and knowledge of German would be an advantage. Experience in analytical TEM techniques is a prerequisite and experience with EBSD and related microstructure analysis techniques is desirable.
Empa in Thun offers an ideal working environment and is situated in a beautiful area in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Applicants are invited for a 1-3-year appointment starting any time between August 2017 and June 2018.
For further information about the position please contact Dr Johann Michler, firstname.lastname@example.org or Dr Xavier Maeder, email@example.com and visit our websites www.empa.ch/web/s206 and Empa-Video.
