Welcome to Anhalt University, one of the most research-intensive universities of applied sciences in Germany. Situated in the heart of Central Germany, we offer international-level research and teaching as well as excellent living and study conditions.
With over 70 study programs, we provide space for personal development, preparing approximately 7,500 German and international students for successful career starts.

The Department of Applied Biosciences and Process Engineering at Anhalt University (Köthen campus) is seeking to fill two part-time or full-time positions (50-100%) limited to three years for a

Research Assistant / PhD Candidate, no 401

for the EU/LSA-EFRE funded project Sim-Bio: Simulation of biological processes on multiple scales as soon as possible. The position holders will receive further training at the university's doctoral center for life sciences. The employment relationship is based on the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states. The position is in pay group 13 TV-L.

Your Responsibilities:

  • mathematical modeling of biological processes including numerical implementation on high- performance computers to address scientific questions,
  • literature review, formulation of scientific hypotheses, computer programming and problem- solving,
  • publishing results in international journals, preparing contributions to international workshops and conferences,
  • acquisition, setup, and administration of necessary IT infrastructure,
  • teaching mathematics, statistics, computer science and possibly life science topics to engineering students.

The scientific content of your doctorate will focus either on research into the epidemiology of infectious diseases or the dynamics of hormonal processes. In the field of infectious disease epidemiology, the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of understanding the behavior and spread of emerging pathogens. Although there is now a lot of knowledge about COVID-19 and its strains, the knowledge about potentially new viral pathogens is limited. However, mathematical models and numerical simulations can be used to predict scenarios for the emergence and spread of such pathogens.
As a result of demographic changes, fertility problems due to hormonal disorders are not uncommon in Germany, for example. Hormones are administered according to certain medical protocols in order to promote follicular growth. However, the intervention in the hormonal cycle is not fully understood and the success of therapy is strongly subject to chance. Mathematical models and simulations can contribute to understanding here as well and provide new treatment approaches.

For any questions, please contact Prof. Dr. Alexander Lange (alexander.lange@hs-anhalt.de).

Your Qualifications:

  • successfully completed university degree (Diploma, Master's) in a natural or engineering science program, including mathematics and computer science, with a keen interest in further scientific training,
  • strong interest in scientific research and its development,
  • excellent programming skills and a thorough theoretical and practical understanding of advanced mathematics,
  • proficiency in English and German (C1 and B2 levels respectively),
  • high commitment to work and meticulousness,
  • ability to work independently but also as part of a team.

For degrees obtained outside of Germany, please provide evidence of equivalency with a German degree. Further information can be found on the website of the central office for foreign education (ZAB): https://www.kmk.org/zab/zeugnisbewertung.html.

What We Offer:

  • a modern working environment with the possibility to pursue a PhD,
  • flexible and family-friendly working hours in accordance with the current service agreement,
  • a university location with excellent transport connections from/to Magdeburg and Halle/Leipzig,
  • benefits of a public service employment contract (including an annual special payment, capital- forming benefits, and a company pension scheme via the German federal and state pension agency, as well as workplace health promotion measures).

Anhalt University is committed to increasing the career opportunities for women and explicitly encourages women to apply. In accordance with SGB IX, applications from disabled candidates will be given preference in cases of equal qualification, aptitude, and professional performance.

Please apply through the Anhalt University's online portal until 17/11/2024.
