Research or Postdoctoral Fellow
The proposed R&D work concerns the challenge of accurately modeling 2G to 5G radio communication systems when extremely large and detailed descriptions of the real environment are available. Typically, the 60GHz outdoor/indoor or long-range VHF-UHF wideband propagation channels need to be predicted. The predictions are mandatory to realistically assess the performance of high bit rate radio communication systems for mission critical applications. The novelty in our approach is to base the performance predictions on detailed deterministic ray tracing computations at radio frequencies. This approach is the missing link between statistical radio channel modeling and classical “specular+diffraction” based ray racing. The required computations are similar to scene rendering for games or virtual reality applications, although “GHz” radio waves are used instead of visible light.
Wideband measurements and very detailed descriptions of the environments are provided. The data will allow us to investigate the use of our recent “point cloud” based modeling approaches (LAPC15, EUCAP16). Cooperation within the COST Action IRACON (http://www.iracon.org) with EPFL and other European research institutions is expected.
Based on your motivation and experience, this research position is suitable for 6 to 12 months R&D work, but might be extended in case of common interest.
